A native Northwest araliad inhabiting moist canyons at mid slopes of the Cascades and Coast Ranges of Oregon and north all the way to the Alaskan panhandle. To 10 ft or so with very spiny golden stems and giant leaves, to 18", are maple-like and green, turning to gold before dropping in autumn. Small panicles of spring, Sputnik-like flowers give way to red fruit in summer and autumn. Handsome in every season. Prefers evenly moist soil or only slight drying in summer with partly to mostly shaded conditions. Frost hardy in USDA zone 4.
