From a small desert oasis NE of Baker City in eastern Oregon, this colony, nearly eradicated by highway development, is from a single clump of about 18" wide by 4" tall, with pretty hay and mahogany colored spines and occasionally cheery yellow flowers. Not quite as fragile as others of the species. Excellent in rock garden or container with bright light and well drained soil. USDA Zone 5, if not 4.Ā
