Historically significant evergreen shrub or small tree native to East, South and Southeast Asia with light green leaves that turn darker as they age and small, delicate white flowers. Young leaves contain around 4% caffeine and varieties of the species are used to make the world's finest teas. In Asia, leaves are harvested in "flushes" of new growth which occur up to three times a year at higher elevations. Full to part sun and rich, moist soil. Prune shrub between 3-6' in height to aid in leaf cultivation. Frost hardy to at least USDA zone 7.
